The history of Carlton county goes back to the French explorers. The county intial residents were the Souix. In 1679 Daniel Greysolon and Sieur DuLuth (Duluth Mn.'s namesake) traveled up the St. Louis River to meet the Souix at Mille Lacs Lake. At this time the French fur traders armed the Ojibway, by trading guns for furs. After about 56 years of peace, in 1736 the, Ojibway in search of fir moved west into the area and war between the two tribes started. This war was to last about 100 years. Because of the arms provided by the French they were able to drive the Souix from the area in to the Dakotas. From 1763, when the French gave the land to England, until 1783 when the United States came into possession the land changed times several times. In 1779 the North West Co had established a permanent trading post on St. Louis Bay, near Fond du Lac Mn. In 1854 the Ojibway singed a treaty with the United States turning much of Minnesota over and agreeing to live on the Fond du Lac Indian Reservation, part of this reservation is in Carlton Co. This set the stage for Minnesota to be come a state. On May 23 1857 Carlton County was formed by the Minnesota legislature. It was named after Reuben Carlton, a government Indian Agent working with the Ojibway Indians at the time. The county was formed from St Louis County and was sparsely populated at the time. In 1857 the first road was built through the county. It was the Military Road, built by the army, to link St. Paul to Duluth. In 1870 the first railroad went through the area paralleling the Military Road. on Feb. 15, 1870 the Northern Pacific railroad was started at what was called Norther Pacific Junction. Twin Lakes on the Military Road was Carlton County's county seat from 1857 to 1890. In 1881 Northern Pacific Junction was incorporated as a village and 1890 it became the county seat. The following year the name was changed to Carlton. The area continued to grow with the major industry being logging. Logging continued to be a major industry until 1918. In 1918 the Great Cloquet Fire occurred, this fire was actually several fires which burned much of the forest in the area and destroyed Cloquet and its sawmills. This was the beginning of the end for the Lumber Industry in the county, Although some sawmills continued to operate until 1935 when the last one closed. The paper mill, match factory, box plant and Wood Conversion plant still exist in Cloquet. Cloquet is the largest town in the county with a population in 1990 of 10,885..
